Last year’s 17.30 gig at Voxhall during SPOT festival was particularly special because it ignited Go Go Berlin’s career. This year, during the same time, a lacklustre and hyggeligt crowd swayed to the sounds of Alcoholic Faith Mission, where wailing and screaming made up for the lack of synthesizers.

The show hall was essentially empty until about two minutes before the start of Alcoholic Faith Mission’s (AFM) gig, suggesting that perhaps they do not yet have a strong following in Aarhus, despite having already been noticed by several north-american publications.

Their set began slowly, with easy-going and well rehearsed songs that stirred no apparent excitement other than a handful of sing-along fans. One of the highlights of the gig was when the band came into its own during a powerful crescendo, with a rendition of “Into Pieces” with Sune Sølund enacting powerful and precise melodies that could, out of context, be confused for vocal exercises

The band put on a solid effort, but a very calculated and measured one, where the musicians potential seemed to be constrained by carefully constructed and cozy love songs. It left me wishing they had played less for their friends in the crowd and more for themselves.
